Green power plant rejected

A biomass-fired power plant planned for California in the US has been rejected.

Valley Bio-Energy developed the facility but the Modesto Irrigation District has abandoned negotiations.

The plant, proposed for a 13.9-acre site in the Mariposa Industrial Park, would have generated 33MW of renewable energy a year from a local supply of waste wood.

However on 19 October 2010 the Modesto Irrigation District voted 3-2 against negotiations for a power purchase agreement for the project.

Valley Bio-Energy had aimed for the plant to be up and running by 2012.
