Government ramps up UK AD plants

The UK has the capacity to produce 7% of its renewable energy required by 2020.

Every year it produces 100 million tonnes of biomass waste, including animal and food waste and sewage sludge, that can be converted into biogas for the generation of heat and power.

Now, the UK government is developing a plan of action that will see a ‘huge increase’ in AD plants.

To date the UK consists of 37 AD plans processing waste from farms and leftover food. There are a further 60 AD plants in the pipeline or already under construction as well as 220 water treatment plants employing AD facilities for sewage.
