Germany eyes Ukrainian biogas imports

German Economy Minister Katherina Reiche recently authorised the Netherlands to explore a North Sea field, arguing that similar projects should be feasible in Germany despite environmental concerns.
She warned that shifting unpopular projects abroad was not a viable long-term solution, adding that economic viability of production remained the core challenge.
Reiche noted that, given current geopolitical conditions, a balance between environmental safeguards and energy security was necessary.
Germany holds significant natural gas reserves in the North Sea, but extraction via fracking has been prohibited since 2017 over groundwater contamination risks.
The country is also planning to expand its use of green gases, including biomethane and synthetic fuels.
Reiche proposed importing biomethane from Ukraine, pointing to the country's considerable biogas potential.
Regulatory hurdles remain on both the Ukrainian and EU sides, but resolving these is expected to lead to a substantial increase in imports.
