Gasum secures full ownership of Helsingborg biogas and upgrading facilities

Nordic energy company Gasum has acquired full ownership of two biogas companies operating in Southern Sweden, marking a significant step in its strategic expansion within the renewable energy sector.

The company has completed the purchase of all remaining shares in NSR Biogas and Liquidgas Biofuels Genesis. Gasum had held a majority stake in Liquidgas Biofuels Genesis since 2023 , but has now secured 100% ownership of both businesses.

NSR Biogas owns and operates a biogas production facility in Helsingborg, a key location in the Skåne region.

Liquidgas Biofuels Genesis is responsible for upgrading the raw biogas produced at the plant. The upgraded gas is subsequently marketed and distributed by Gasum.

The facility processes approximately 160,000 tonnes of household and industrial waste, including manure, with a maximum production capacity of 80 gigawatt hours (GWh) of upgraded biogas per annum.

“Since we already had majority ownership of the upgrading operations, it was a logical next step to assume full control of the entire production chain in Helsingborg,” said Mika Wiljanen, CEO of Gasum.

“This acquisition not only strengthens our presence in the competitive Skåne region but also enables us to optimise plant operations and fully utilise its production potential.”

Gasum is making substantial investments to increase biogas production across Sweden. The company’s first new large-scale biogas facility began operations in early 2025, with a second currently under construction and slated to commence in 2026.

Gasum’s long-term ambition is to supply 7 terawatt hours (TWh) of renewable gas to the Nordic market annually by 2027.
