In September, Future Biogas announced it had entered a 15-year partnership with AstraZeneca to establish the UK’s first unsubsidised industrial-scale supply of biomethane gas. Philipp Lukas, CEO of Future Biogas, reveals more about the partnership and why it represents a step forward for the market as a whole.
AstraZeneca came to the market in the summer of 2020, seeking green gas solutions to match their decarbonisation targets, Lukas told Bioenergy Insight. AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot outlined these targets in January of that year, in the unveiling of the organisation’s Ambition Zero Carbon strategy.
A request for information (RFI) and request for proposal (RPF) followed in late 2021 and early 2022 respectively, setting out ambitious targets and stating that anaerobic digestion (AD) was their preferred solution.
“Future Biogas proposed a novel unsubsidised approach to green gas production that guaranteed full additionality. After being shortlisted and following detailed discussion and analysis in December 2021, Future Biogas announced their partnership publicly,” added Lukas.
