Enercity begins final commissioning of Hanover biomass cogeneration plant

news item image
German energy company Enercity has entered the final commissioning phase of its new 90 MW biomass cogeneration plant in Hanover’s Stöcken district, marking a key milestone in the city’s transition away from coal.

Once fully operational, the facility will supply green district heating to Hanover and the nearby Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles plant.

The biomass plant is designed to replace the existing Stöcken coal-fired power station, cutting the city’s annual CO₂ emissions by around 300,000 tonnes.

The new plant operates by burning waste wood in a grate boiler to produce both heat and electricity. A heat pump captures waste heat from the flue gas, raising it to district heating temperature levels and boosting the plant’s overall efficiency to nearly 100 percent.

Enercity expects the facility to deliver approximately 500 million kWh of heat each year, helping to secure a sustainable and reliable energy supply for households and industry in the region.
