The European Energy Exchange (EEX) has successfully launched the new biogas production certificates (CPBs – Certificats de Production de Biogaz) registry in France, commencing operations on 16 June.
This initiative, commissioned by the French Ministry responsible for Energy, aims to bolster the development of biomethane as a renewable energy source within the country.
The CPB scheme, introduced under the 2021 French Climate and Resilience Act, obliges natural gas suppliers to provide their customers with a minimum proportion of biomethane.
This is enforced through a requirement to surrender CPBs to the French government, thereby encouraging the integration of renewable gases into the national energy mix.
Aude Filippi, EEX Director of Business Development for Gas and Sustainability Markets, said: “We are proud to operate this registry in partnership with the French Ministry and to contribute to France’s transition towards a more sustainable energy system.”
Natural gas suppliers may acquire CPBs either by producing biomethane themselves or by purchasing certificates from biomethane producers. Biomethane is recognised as a vital renewable energy carrier, as it can substitute natural gas, offer energy storage solutions, and support decarbonisation efforts.
