Drax to cease operations at Williams Lake pellet plant

Drax has announced it will cease operations at its pellet plant in Williams Lake by the end of 2025, citing a significant decline in available fibre supply.
The company said curtailments and closures at nearby sawmills, along with the loss of a bid for key local fibre, have made continued operations at the facility commercially unviable.
According to Drax, the plant will undergo an orderly wind-down and will operate only until remaining fibre supplies are depleted.
The decision affects approximately 30 employees.
“The decision to cease operations weighs heavily on us, as we recognise the uncertainty it creates for our dedicated employees and their families,” said Matt White, Executive Vice President of Pellet Operations for Drax.
“We are profoundly grateful for their commitment and resilience, and for the unwavering support of our community. Together, we will navigate this challenging time with compassion and transparency.”
Drax claimed that affected workers will receive a comprehensive support package, including severance and wellbeing assistance.
