Covanta expands Hawaii biomass plant

Covanta Energy's expansion of the H-Power renewable power plant in Honolulu in Hawaii has finished.

The $302 million (€232 million) project has increased the plant's handling capacity by 900 tonnes to 3,000 tonnes per day of municipal solid waste (MSW). A third boiler has also been installed.

Covanta Energy began expanding the facility at the end of 2009, before which it produced 5MW of power. It can now generate 90MW of renewable power, almost 10% of Oahu's energy needs.
