Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners backs Finland’s largest biogas plant

The project, developed in partnership with local company Wega, is expected to generate more than 200 GWh of biomethane annually, equivalent to displacing around 38,000 tonnes of fossil CO₂ emissions.
When fully operational, the plant will process over 600,000 tonnes of agricultural and industrial organic waste each year.
Construction of the Nivala-based facility is scheduled to begin in late 2025, with commissioning targeted for the second half of 2027.
The Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment awarded the project a major capital expenditure grant in 2024, highlighting its strategic importance to national energy policy.
The investment is being made through CIP’s CI Advanced Bioenergy Fund I (CI ABF I).
This marks the fund’s third project and its first outside Denmark, as it continues to expand its portfolio of greenfield bioenergy developments.
Thomas Dalsgaard, Partner at CIP, said: “We are excited to enter the Finnish bioenergy market with our first investment in Nivalan Biokaasu. It represents a major milestone for our fund and investors and will make a significant contribution to energy security and the green transition, create local jobs and drive investments across the agricultural sector and surrounding rural communities. We look forward to starting construction and progressing the project in close collaboration with local farmers and authorities.”
The financial sum was not disclosed.
