Brazil’s national development bank, BNDES, has approved a direct investment of BRL 85.8 million (around USD 16 million) in Bioo Investimentos e Participações SA, a company specialising in biomethane production.
The funding, channelled through the bank’s subsidiary BNDES Participações SA, will give the institution a 19.9% shareholding in the company.
Bioo converts agricultural organic waste into biomethane, biogenic carbon dioxide and biofertilisers. According to the bank, the investment will back the construction of two new Integrated Waste Treatment Centres (CTIR).
BNDES President Aloizio Mercadante said the facilities have the potential to deliver significant environmental benefits.
“Each of the company’s biomethane plants will be able to cut CO₂ emissions by an amount comparable to the annual electricity consumption of up to 20,000 households,” he noted.
