BLAZE – a new way for cogeneration from residual biomass

BLAZE is a Horizon 2020 project aimed at developing a biomass low-cost, advanced and zero-emission (BLAZE) CHP plant – the first of its kind. This will be achieved by developing a dual fluidised bed technology integrated with high-temperature gas cleaning and conditioning systems and solid oxide fuel cells.

The technology is designed to utilise a wide range of biomass residues (forest, agricultural, industrial, municipal waste) within CHP capacity ranges from 25 kWe to 5 MWe scale to reach higher efficiencies (50% electrical vs the actual 20%), lower investment (less than 4000€ per kilowatt) and operation (approximately 0.05 €/kWh) costs, projecting the production of electricity at costs below €0.10 per kWh and with almost zero gaseous emissions and particulate matter.

The project is led by the Guglielmo Marconi University, alongside industrial partners, the University of L’Aquila, ENEA, EPFL, Walter Tosto, SOLIDpower, Hygear, Enereco, and the European Biomass Industry Association.
