Biogasclean and Concord Group to accelerate green fuel production in Southeast Asia

The collaboration aims to convert palm oil mill effluent (POME), a by-product of palm oil production, into clean energy to support Southeast Asia’s growing demand for sustainable fuels.
The agreement, signed during EXPO 2025 in Osaka, Japan, brings together proven European cleantech solutions with Malaysia’s expanding bioenergy sector.
Biogasclean’s biological desulphurisation and methanation technology will be deployed to purify biogas produced from POME through anaerobic digestion, generating green electricity for the Malaysian power grid.
Looking ahead, the partnership also paves the way for upgrading biogas into biomethane for gas grid injection or converting it into Bio-LNG. This would enable the use of renewable fuels in marine and road transport, further cutting carbon emissions across sectors.
The signing ceremony was attended by Niels Jensen, Chief Executive of Biogasclean, and Datuk Khairuddin Bin Tan Sri Mohd Hussin, Chief Executive of Concord Group, alongside Malaysia’s Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Dato’ Haji Mad Zaidi bin Mohd, and Anton Kjoelby, Commercial Officer for Energy at the Royal Danish Embassy in Tokyo.
The initiative aligns with Southeast Asia’s broader push towards net-zero targets, as regional governments ramp up investments in clean energy and sustainable infrastructure.
Singapore, in particular, has emerged as a hub for green growth, with its Economic Development Board reporting that the number of companies generating green revenues has more than doubled since 2016.
National efforts such as the Singapore Green Plan 2030 and the Singapore-Asia Taxonomy for Sustainable Finance are further strengthening the region’s role in the global transition to a low-carbon economy.
