Biogas plant to be built in Belarus city

A $2 million (€1.4 million) biogas plant is to be built at a solid domestic waste landfill site near Grodno, Belarus.

Sweden-based Vireo Energy intend for the project to extract biogas from the landfill and burn it to generate around 1MW of electricity. Development will begin next year.

After biogas is extracted, grass will cover the landfill in order to rule out any environmental concerns about methane. The plant's service life will be at least ten years.

Vireo Energy, part of the Kinnevik Group, has a history of developing and operating electricity and heat generating plants powered by biogas. According to the Economy Committee of the Grodno Oblast Executive Committee, the company has already implemented similar projects in Vitebsk and Orsha.
