A renewable biogas plant capable of converting nearly 100,000 tonnes of poultry manure into green gas each year has been proposed for Drum, County Monaghan in Ireland.
Stream BioEnergy Ireland Limited submitted the planning application to Monaghan County Council on 10 December last year, with a decision expected by 3 February.
The development would occupy approximately 6.2 hectares of land in the townlands of Maghernakelly and Drumcall, positioned west of the R189 Road and south of the L2280 Road.
The facility would employ anaerobic digestion technology to process poultry manure alongside other biodegradable agricultural and agri-food organic materials.
Infrastructure would include administrative offices, a main processing building fitted with odour control systems, a bunded tank farm and a CO₂ liquefaction plant.
The development also incorporates local road improvements and provision for 35 car parking spaces.
Stream BioEnergy has submitted an environmental impact assessment report alongside the application. T
he company currently operates the Tully Biogas plant in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, which has processed 40,000 tonnes of chicken litter annually since 2017, generating 3MW of renewable electricity sufficient to power 6,000 homes.
The Ballymena facility was among the first globally to use chicken litter as a sole feedstock at commercial scale.
The 10-year permission sought for the Drum development would represent a significant expansion of poultry waste-to-energy capacity in the region, more than doubling the throughput achieved at the company's Northern Ireland operation.
