BASF has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Sinopec Tianranqi Company, a subsidiary of Sinopec, and BASF-YPC Company Limited, the 50:50 BASF–Sinopec joint venture, to accelerate the large-scale use of biomethane at the Nanjing Verbund site.
The partners said the move will support low-carbon operations and help reduce product carbon footprints for downstream customers.
Under the agreement, Sinopec Tianranqi Company will supply BASF-YPC with ISCC PLUS-certified biomethane that meets national standards and includes full carbon-footprint data.
BASF-YPC will use the biomethane as a sustainable feedstock in its production processes at Nanjing, replacing fossil-based inputs and lowering the emissions intensity of its output.
The parties are also exploring opportunities to extend biomethane use to other BASF production sites to further scale low-carbon energy and feedstock solutions.
BASF said the partnership reinforces its efforts to decarbonise its integrated value chains and progress towards its 2050 net-zero target.
Bram Jansen, Senior Vice President, Global Direct & Logistics Procurement at BASF, said the agreement “injects momentum into the green transformation of our customers in China and across the Asia-Pacific region”.
BASF-YPC Vice President Shan Jianhua described the deal as a milestone, noting that it enables the joint venture to expand into bio-based feedstocks and offer customers products with a reduced carbon footprint.
Dong Xianyong, Chairman of Sinopec Gas Company, said biomethane represents an important direction for clean energy and that the collaboration marks the start of broader cooperation in new green and low-carbon fields.
