Asterion to invest €1.5 billion in biomethane projects across key European markets

According to the company, the investment package includes €800 million in equity, made up of €400 million from Asterion Industrial Infra Fund III and a further €400 million in co-investment commitments from existing investors.
The funding will support the development, construction and operation of biomethane assets across key European markets, using strategies tailored to local regulatory and market conditions.
ABIO currently operates six biomethane plants across Europe, with a further six facilities under construction.
The platform has completed almost ten transactions in recent months, including greenfield developments, acquisitions and asset conversions. Asterion expects ABIO to reach 20 operational biomethane plants by the end of 2026.
“ABIO represents exactly the type of platform we seek to back: scalable, capital-efficient and positioned at the intersection of the energy transition and long-term infrastructure demand,” said Jesús Olmos, Chief Executive Officer and Founding Partner of Asterion Industrial Partners.
With the new funding and its existing development pipeline, ABIO is expected to achieve a biomethane production capacity of around 3 TWh within the next three to four years, strengthening its contribution to Europe’s energy transition and energy security.
Winnie Wutte, Founding Partner of Asterion Industrial Partners, said the capital raise reflects strong investor confidence in biomethane. “It underlines our conviction in biomethane as a scalable and strategic solution for decarbonisation, energy security and sustainable waste management,” she said.
Growing pan-European footprint
ABIO has established operations in five key European markets: Iberia, Italy, Germany, the Benelux region and the United Kingdom.
In more mature markets in Central and Northern Europe, growth is largely driven by acquisitions and the conversion of existing assets. In Southern Europe, the focus remains on greenfield developments.
Operations are managed through local platforms supported by specialised, in-country teams. Asterion says this structure allows ABIO to respond effectively to national regulatory frameworks and feedstock availability while building scale at a European level.
“ABIO is scaling with discipline, combining a visible development pipeline with selective acquisitions to build a diversified, pan-European biomethane platform with strong long-term fundamentals,” said Irene Otero-Novas, Chief Executive Officer of ABIO and Operating Partner at Asterion Industrial Partners.
In Iberia, ABIO operates through FiveBioenergy, where two biomethane plants are currently under construction and at least two additional projects are expected to begin construction during 2026. In Italy, the platform owns Fiamma Verde, with four assets under construction that are scheduled to enter operation in 2026.
In the Benelux region, ABIO operates under the Byont brand, where two operational plants are being converted from power generation to biomethane production, alongside a third large facility undergoing upgrades. In Germany, operations are carried out through Byont DE, with two Bio-LNG plants already in operation. In the UK, ABIO operates via Pinta Energy, which currently runs one biomethane facility and is targeting further projects.
Circular economy strategy
Asterion says ABIO follows a fully integrated circular economy model. Agricultural residues are converted into renewable biomethane, captured CO₂ for industrial use and digestate, which can be applied as a natural fertiliser. Biomethane is increasingly viewed as a key decarbonisation solution because it can replace natural gas using existing infrastructure while also addressing agricultural waste management challenges.
Looking ahead, Asterion aims for ABIO to operate 40 biomethane plants across Europe by 2030, producing up to 3.5 TWh of biomethane annually. This would be equivalent to the energy consumption of more than 220,000 households and could avoid up to 8 million tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions.
The company says the strategy positions ABIO as a long-term infrastructure platform capable of supporting Europe’s transition to a low-carbon energy system while improving energy security and resource efficiency.
