Anaergia Technologies has secured a C$43.8 million (€29.6 million) design-build contract to deliver a renewable power generation facility for the East County Advanced Water Purification Joint Powers Authority (JPA) in San Diego County, the company announced on Thursday.
The deal extends the Canadian firm’s long-running partnership with the JPA and tasks Anaergia with designing, constructing, commissioning and starting up a turnkey plant that converts organic waste into renewable energy.
The facility will use high-efficiency anaerobic digestion alongside combined heat and power technology to produce electricity from biogas generated on-site.
Anaergia said the system is expected to bolster the JPA’s energy resilience and cut operational costs. Construction is due to be completed within two years.
Kyle Swanson, CEO and General Manager of Padre Dam Municipal Water District, which operates the East County Advanced Water Purification Plant, said the project would “serve our ratepayers by reducing operating costs and enhancing energy resiliency of critical high-quality water infrastructure confronted with rising power costs”.
“We are pleased to continue our successful partnership with Anaergia in delivering both economic and environmental benefits for our community,” he added.
Anaergia CEO Assaf Onn said the contract “underscores the strength of our collaboration with the JPA” and highlights how the company’s integrated technologies “help customers decarbonise operations, advance their clean energy transition objectives and strengthen energy independence”.
The East County Advanced Water Purification Programme is a collaboration between Padre Dam Municipal Water District, the City of El Cajon, the County of San Diego and Helix Water District.
The scheme aims to provide a new drought-resilient drinking water supply by purifying recycled water, ultimately meeting up to 30% of East San Diego County’s demand.
