Advanced Woody Biomass Alliance launches to unite expanding sector

The Advanced Woody Biomass Alliance (AWBA) evolves from the US Industrial Pellet Association (USIPA), which helped establish a global supply chain for responsibly sourced wood pellets over the past decade.
The industry currently mobilises around $2bn in woody biomass annually to customers across multiple continents.
Darrell Smith, executive director of AWBA, said the launch reflected how woody biomass applications are evolving, with companies across diverse industries mobilising around a common opportunity to deliver renewable carbon solutions that support working forests.
The Alliance aims to strengthen collaboration, advance supportive policy frameworks and catalyse investment in woody biomass deployment worldwide.
Its formation comes as demand for energy, fuels and industrial goods continues to rise alongside emissions-reduction commitments, driving convergence among historically distinct sectors.
Tom Reilley, chairman of the board, said bringing together participants across the value chain would strengthen the sector's ability to engage constructively with policymakers, partners and markets.
