CR&R to build $10m AD plant in California

California-based CR&R Waste and Recycling Services is set to build a $100 million (€88.7 million) anaerobic digester complex in Perris, California.

The company expects to have the plant up and running by early 2016.

Using food scraps and garden waste as feedstock, the facility will produce fertiliser and biogas, which will be used to power 45% of the vehicles in CR&R’s waste collection and street-sweeping fleet.

By using anaerobic digestion, the plant will be able to process 84,000 tons of waste each year, while creating renewable energy that will ultimately save the company money on fuel. 

Feedstock collection has already begun from surrounding public authorities and commercial companies.

The collection is part of arrangement of a new law set by the State of California in 2014, making it mandatory for certain businesses, multifamily dwellings, and local authorities to implement organic waste recycling programmes by 2016.

The state aims to utilise 75% of waste currently headed to landfills by 2020.
