New renewable energy project capable of powering 25,000 LA homes

Republic Services, an industry leader in US recycling and non-hazardous solid waste, has announced a new landfill gas-to-energy (LFGTE) project located at Sunshine Canyon Landfill near Los Angeles, California. The 20MW renewable energy project is capable of generating enough electricity to power nearly 25,000 area homes.

Sunshine Canyon Landfill has enabled growth in Los Angeles for decades and now it will be there to help a great community achieve its sustainability goals.'

Republic Services partnered with Sunshine Gas Producers, a joint venture between DTE Biomass Energy and Aria Energy, to develop the Sunshine Canyon LFGTE project.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), LFGTE projects reduce reliance on non-renewable energy resources, such as coal or petroleum. The EPA estimates that 3MW of energy produced from landfill gas is equivalent to preventing carbon emissions generated by the consumption of 16.6 million gallons of petrol. Based on EPA calculations, the carbon emissions prevented by the new Sunshine Canyon LFGTE project from entering the air is equivalent to the consumption of more than 100 million gallons of petrol.

Republic Services operates eight LFGTE projects in the State of California, and 73 total LFGTE projects nationwide. Combined, these projects capture and convert enough landfill gas into energy to power more than 250,000 homes per year.
