Colorado-based Merrick & Co has earned a National Recognition Award for exemplary engineering achievement in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ (ACEC) 57th annual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) for Gevo, Inc.’s Northwest Iowa Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Plant in Doon, Iowa.
Using biogas generated at the three area dairy farms, the plant annually produces more than 4000 million Btu of low carbon intensity RNG for use in the production of sustainable fuels for aviation and other applications.
RNG from the project currently is being sold in California where companies and users alike benefit from reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Merrick created an easily scalable design for transporting biogas from the dairy sites and for upgrading the gas at the Doon facility.
Gevo is now able to use a portion of the plant’s RNG production as process energy at its own facilities helping to achieve its own sustainability goals.
Merrick serves clients in the bioprocessing, energy, security, infrastructure, manufacturing, and life sciences markets. Other project participants include Larsen Engineering and Cavenaugh and Associates.
The project is eligible for additional honours as part of 203 entries this year, representing engineering excellence from throughout the nation and the world.
Judging for the awards programme took place last month and was conducted by a national 32-member panel of built environment leaders, along with experts from government, the media and academia.
Award criteria focused on uniqueness and originality, technical innovation, social and economic value, and generating excitement for the engineering profession.
