£10 million pellet plant planned for Yorkshire

The facility is going to use a patented process from ARC Applied Sciences, who claim that it will ‘revolutionise’ the UK’s biomass supply.

Sourced from UK wood and using technology developed at the company’s first plant in Austria, the pellets from the plant in East Yorkshire are to be supplied nationally to domestic and commercial consumers. The plant is expected to be operational by 2019 and will run under the brand Y Pellets.

Pellets produced at the Austria facilities and those that are going to be produced by the Yorkshire plant are En Plus standard compliant.

In a press release, Y Pellets said that the project is part of a long-term strategy to strengthen its place in the UK biomass market.

Neil Holland, Director of ARC Applied Sciences and Managing Director of Y Pellets said in a statement: “[The] new refinery will enable us to provide the best possible product manufactured from sustainably-sourced wood and produced by a local workforce.”

The development comes as part of the government’s Northern Powerhouse strategy, with Jake Berry, Minister for the Northern Powerhouse and Local Growth, supporting the plant and saying that: “Y Pellets' new processing plant is an important boost not only to the local economy but to the region and the country and demonstrates that we have the right skills, transport infrastructure, workforce and supply chains on a regional level to help grow their business in a national and international marketplace."
